Mental Wellness Program - For People with Epilepsy

Provided by BC Epilepsy Society

A one-on-one counselling program for people living with epilepsy and their immediate family who have an epilepsy related purpose for seeking counselling.
The Mental Wellness Program involves professional counsellors with Master's degrees who have attended a specialized training program about epilepsy. Counsellors also are individuals who live with epilepsy themselves so clients come into a space of genuine understanding.

Cost: The cost is on a sliding scale that ranges from $20 - $150 depending on the client's familial income.

Eligibility:
  • Clients require a diagnosis of epilepsy which can be confirmed with a doctor
  • Clients must have an epilepsy-related reason for seeking counselling
  • Clients may also have a comorbid diagnosis of functional seizures (psychogenic non-epileptic seizures)
  • Aged 8 years of age or older (*this could change depending on counsellor training and availability)

Location: Sessions are mostly offered online. If a client and counsellor both live in the same community and the client prefers in-person sessions, they can speak to the counsellor about that option.

How to Access the Program: There are two ways to access the program:
  • A doctor can refer a patient to the program. The doctor would fill out a referral form and fax it to the office . Upon receipt of a completed referral form, one of the program staff will be in touch to have an online intake meeting set up.
  • Patients can self-refer into the program. They can call the office at 604-875-6704 and schedule an online intake meeting with one of the program staff members. After the completion of an online intake meeting, they will schedule a session with one of the counsellors.
